The legal practice of James Chong Lawyers was built around the sole practice established by James Chong in 1985.

Today, carrying on the goodwill of James Chong, Denning Chong is the director and principal of the legal practice which was incorporated in 2005.

 

Denning Chong

Denning Chong is the director of the legal practice of James Chong Lawyers.   His specialty is in complex property and commercial matters including property developments and joint ventures, sale and or acquisitions of hotels, shopping centres, large industrial lands, apartment developments, design and construct transactions.

He has in-depth experience with respect to commercial structuring, preparation of investment memorandums, leasing and franchising issues, complex funding and security documentations.

In respect to litigation, Denning has over 20 years of experience in litigious matters, and have managed extensively commercial litigation matters at all Court levels, including being involved in Federal Court and High Court matters.

Some of his clients include Royal Bank of Canada (Asia), Hiap Hoe Limited (SGX listed), TS Law Group, Mutual Limited, UOA Australia Ltd, Adnate Hotel, Quality Ambassador Hotel,  Waterford Shopping Centre.

He is a director of Hiap Hoe Limited’s Australian subsidiaries, which hold over $1 billion in its property portfolio in Australia.

He also represents the Australian interests of CP Group, a significant Malaysian property developer and is a director of its Australian interests.

Similarly, he represents TS Holdings Ltd which is one of the largest private companies in Malaysia, in its Australian interests.

Denning has also represented various ASX listed companies including Tikforce Ltd, Resource Mining Corporation Limited, Sultan Corporation Limited, Terrain Minerals Limited and Navigator Resources Limited, Golden West Resources Ltd, Tungsten Mining Ltd.

Denning is the Managing Director of Singular Health Ltd (ASX: SHG) which focusses on medical technology.

Denning is also a Non-Executive director of Mutual Ltd, which is an Australian based cash and credit investment manager, which has significant funds under management.

Denning Chong is a Notary Public and a Registered Migration Agent.   He is conversant in the Cantonese Dialect.

Elaine Baldwin

LLB., B.Com, M.Tax

Elaine Baldwin is a graduate of the University of Western Australia (LL.B and B.Com) and was admitted as a Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Western Australia in 2000.

Elaine Baldwin has significant knowledge in taxation law, having completed her Masters in Taxation Law. Elaine Baldwin has a wealth of experience in Bankruptcy, Insolvency and Taxation litigation having been being a member at the Executive Level of the Australian Tax Office for the majority of her career.

Dr. Kevin James O’Toole

B.Ec., B.Sc., LL.B, Ph.D. (UWA) – (General Counsel)

Kevin O’Toole is admitted to practice as a Barrister and Solicitor in the Supreme Courts of Western Australia and Victoria.

Prior to commencing legal practice in Perth he was an administrative law advisor to the Department of Aviation in Canberra, and later Director of Compensation Appeals for the Commonwealth. In those capacities he was counsel for numerous Commonwealth government departments and institutions, at hearings in a variety of jurisdictions throughout Australia, including Commonwealth Employees Compensation, Social Security and Freedom of Information.

From 1987 to 2003 he had a substantial practice in Perth in commercial conveyancing and litigation and was counsel in trials in all levels of courts in Western Australia. He represented substantial clients including the Water Corporation of Western Australia, the Australian Design Council and Underwater World at Hillarys.

From 2008 to 2012 was he was intellectual property solicitor and senior legal counsel to the University of Western Australian.

He has a doctorate in classics from the University of Western Australia by a thesis entitled The Athenian Basileus to 323 BCE: myth and reality, which is a critical analysis of ancient Greek philology and the legal institutions of classical Athens, accessible at https://research-repository.uwa.edu.au/en/publications/the-athenian-basileus-to-323-bce-myth-and-reality.

Audrey Li

LLB, B.Com – Senior Associate

Audrey Li is a commercial lawyer. In addition, Audrey provides advice and legal representation in estate and non-contentious probate matters. Audrey is experienced in making applications for registration of trade marks. Audrey is a team leader in James Chong Lawyers’ property transactions and conveyancing practice. She is fluent in the French language.

Cindy Ma

BA (CommSt) LLB

Cindy Ma commenced employment with James Chong Lawyers in 2013 and practices as a commercial litigator. She has been involved in and advised on a variety of different matters including contract and leasing disputes, wills and estates, local government prosecutions and town planning disputes, negligence, property law, migration, family law, and employment law. Cindy has acted for clients in respect of the Local Government Act, and Food Act prosecutions.

Cindy Ma has represented clients in the Magistrates Court (civil, criminal and industrial jurisdictions), District Court, Supreme Court, Family Court, Federal Court, Fair Work Commission, the Industrial Relations Commission, and the State Administrative Tribunal.

Cindy Ma also holds a Bachelor of Arts degree majoring in Communication Studies. She is conversant in Cantonese.

She is currently completing her Master of Laws at the University of Western Australia.

John Cope

BA Hons. Dip Law – Senior Family Lawyer – Accredited Mediator

John Cope completed his legal studies at the Inns of Court School of Law in London following a Diploma at the College of Law in York (UK).

Prior to completing his studies John qualified as an architect at Leeds Metropolitan University with an Honours Degree.

Since completing his legal studies John has practiced at the Bar in London and specialised in Criminal Law and Personal Injury Law before moving into Family Law.

John Cope moved to Perth in 2003 and has since then practiced exclusively in the area of Family Law. He has worked in all areas of Family Law including the Children’s Court, Family Court and State Administrative Tribunal.
John Cope is a qualified Independent Children’s Lawyer and has also undertaken the LEADR course for mediators.
John Cope is a member of the WA Family Law Practitioners Association.

Jazton Tan

Jazton was admitted to practice in the Supreme Court of Western Australia in October 2022.

Jazton graduated from Murdoch University with a Bachelor of Laws in 2020. Jazton also holds a Bachelor of Science from The University of Western Australia majoring in Psychological Science.

Prior to joining James Chong Lawyers, Jazton was involved in legal matters involving family law, wills & estates, property law and conveyancing.

Jazton speaks conversational Indonesian and Mandarin.
